December

December’s been a busy month. Christmas started early, with the erection of our tree at the V&A on December 2nd. The Red Velvet Tree of Love was great fun to build with our wonderful friends and it immediately garnered a lot of publicity.

After working till 2.30am on the second to get it built we had to come back in first thing the next morning for a photo call with the press. It was exhausting but well worth it as the following day it hit the news pages of the Guardian as well as being featured online.

Still at the V&A I gave a lunchtime lecture on the theme of the club to catwalk show. It was good to see our scarves in the shop there, especially the Red Hands design which was a major theme in the talk.

Christmas shopping can be fun. My favourite moment this year were walking along the luxurious and pretty “Cities” themed carpet in the Regents Arcade, the Eros statue as a giant snow globe, seeing the knitted taxi in Spitalfields Market,  and, more locally, spotting the very talented actors Damien Lewis and Helen McCrory turning on the lights at this years Highgate Festival.

Saturday was the annual party for the Contemporary Circle at the R.A. This party always had mad presents in a Secret Santa lucky dip. This year the crazy hats were the favourite, but you never get what you want because everyone after you can swap with you in this game.

Sunday was a couple of lovely parties, starting with tea at the Wolseley, an annual ritual a group of us enjoy. This year I had a very pretty plate of mini macaroons. Then a lovely party at our friend Damien’s house in Hackney, with champagne and sparkling conversation in the kitchen and a very exotic Christmas Cactus featuring a good bunch of mistletoe, instead of the usual pine.

Contemporary art continues to be inspire us, with a visit to the Jake and Dinos Chapman show at the Serpentine Gallery’s newly opened Magazine Gallery. Next to which is a Zaha Hadid designed café, all swooping curves and geometric tables.

This season also marks our thirtieth birthday at English Eccentrics. We had a little get together for all the ex-staff who we could trace, over the years, and some long-term supporters.  It was a wonderful evening and so good to see all the lovely people who made up the EE team at various times.

Finally, for those of you who, like me,  are still frantically trying to wrap presents, here’s an idea. In Japan they used “Furoshiki”, squares of fabric, to wrap presents. These not only look great, but are recyclable too. So if you go to your local charity shop and buy some old scarves you could try his look for a change.
