Rishikesh - Holy Place on the Ganga

Rishikesh, located in the foothills pop the Himalaya, it is famous for being the gateway to the mountains as well as being the yoga capital of the world. For Hindus, it is one of their holiest places. It is a meat and alcohol free city. Brought to prominence in the West by the Beatles in the late 1960’s.

Rishikesh - Guru

On a visit to Rishikesh, we spot a very popular guru called Mooji. Originally from Jamaica and named Anthony Paul Moo-Young, he lived for a long time in Brixton (London). He then became a follower of the guru Papaji and is now based in Portugal. He has garnered a large international following.

RIshikesh - Shiva

Shiva is known as the Destroyer, part of a trilogy with  Brahma, the Creator, and Vishnu, the Observer.  These deities are the main Hindu gods along with their respective wives, Parvati, Saraswati and Lakshmi.

Rishikesh - Hanuman

Hanuman is the monkey- faced god. He is known for many acts including having rescued Sita from Ravanna, the demon who abducted her to Sri Lanka. He is a shape changer, sometimes cat, sometimes mountain when not a monkey. To get to Sri Lanka, he discovered his ability to fly.

This image shows Hanuman with Rama and Sita inside his chest as a proof of his devotion.

Rishikesh - Tikiri Family Temple

Lakshmi with whom we were staying, along with the Sadhus in her ashram/camp is part of the Tikiri family. This temple was was built by her ancestors.
